Dr. Mohammad Zaki Ahmad is currently an Associate Professor at the School of International Studies. Since 2021, he has been the Director of the Asian Institute of International Affairs and Diplomacy (AIIAD). From 2014 to 2017, he served as the Deputy Dean of SOIS Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). Previously, he headed the Department of International Affairs (INTAFF) from 2011 to 2013. During that period, he led a special task force responsible for preparing and drafting the Self-Assessment Report for ASEAN University Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) for the Bachelor of International Affairs Management (BIAM) Program. Dr. Zaki also acted as a speaker in various workshops and seminars on the program's compliance with AUN-QA criteria.
Dr. Zaki graduated with a BA in International Relations (with a concentration on Asia) from the University of Memphis, USA, in 1997. In 2002, he earned a Master's degree in Maritime Policy (with Distinction) from the University of Wollongong, Australia. From 2007 to 2010, he was a PhD candidate at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS), University of Wollongong, and successfully obtained his doctorate degree in maritime policy in 2011.
His main research interests and publications focus on international relations, the law of the sea, coastal management, maritime territorial and sovereignty disputes, fisheries policy, and maritime law enforcement. Currently, Dr. Zaki is involved in research projects concerning the role of Malaysian fishermen in combating IUU fishing and off-farm activities involving coastal fishermen in the state of Kedah.
